McCain's October 16th appearance on Late Night with David Letterma

New York (That Happened!) - Not all the numbers are bad for John McCain.

Though the Republican Presidential nominee has been struggling in the polls as of late, McCain isn’t out of the race yet. At least not the late night race.

McCain’s October 16th appearance on Late Night with David Letterman boosted the show’s ratings by over three million viewers. Letterman usually loses the late night battle with Jay Leno, but McCain’s appearance on the show easily trumped Leno’s viewership and was the best night Letterman has had since bringing Oprah Winfrey to the program.

McCain was scheduled to appear at an earlier date on the Late Show but had to cancel his appearance at the last minute. That decision did not go unnoticed by the late night comic, and Letterman poked fun at McCain for weeks following his cancellation. After weeks of ribbing from Letterman, McCain finally made his appearance.

Perhaps the highlight of the evening came when Senator McCain admits to Letterman that he “made a mistake.” Not a mistake in policy or in the campaign trail, but rather a mistake in canceling his last appearance.

But all is well that ends well, and even if McCain can’t rally his own numbers in this coming election, he certainly has helped give David Letterman a leg up on his own competition. On an interesting side note, McCain’s late night competition that night was none other than Vice Presidential Nominee Joe Biden.
