New York (That Happened) - For decades evidence has shown the health benefits to exercise. Now researchers have discovered another benefit for women who stay in shape.
If you’re fit and get regal exercise, you might prevent more than just diabetes and heart disease — you could be preventing breast cancer, according to a new study in the journal Breast Cancer Research.
Science examined 32,000 post-menopausal women over 11 years and found that women who preformed heavy house work such as scrubbing floors or chopping wood, or performed strenuous workouts such as running or aerobics, were 30 percent less likely to develop breast cancer than women who did less strenuous housework or had a less active lifestyle.
Researchers say there is a link between a sedentary lifestyle and cancer. They also say that if a women is overweight or obese, exercise will not reduce her risk of developing breast cancer.
Lead author Michael Leitzmann said: “In this cohort of postmenopausal women, breast cancer risk reduction appeared to be limited to vigorous forms of activity.
“It was apparent among normal weight women but not overweight women.
“Our findings suggest that physical activity acts through underlying biological mechanisms that are independent of body weight control.”
The study was conducted by the National Cancer Institute.
