London - It is advised that men should not drink more than three or four servings of alcohol, while women should not drink more than two to three servings.
Studies by the Office for National Statistics for 2007 and the General Household Survey show that out of 13,000 homes in the UK, one in three adults exceed that amount on their daily limit, and up to double of that on their heaviest drinking days.
When asked what a serving of alcohol is considered to be, only 86% of the people surveyed were even aware of the measurement of suggested servings. 68% of professional women surveyed had drank within the past seven days, and eight to ten men had done so as well.
While men drink more than women, 24% compared to 15%, it is said that the middle-class workers do more so than upper-class, professional workers. 77% of women drank their heaviest at home, while 54% of men did so. Nine out of ten of them were fully aware of the dangers of alcohol consumption.
The survey also suggests that drinking is putting the lives of over 7 million drinkers at risk for diseases such as cirrhosis of the liver or cancer, both fatal and irreversible conditions.
