New York - For the first time Apple is recommending to users of its operating system to install an antivirus.

According to the company the Mac could be vulnerable to web applicaton exploits which have replaced operating system vulnerabilities as the greatest threat to the to computers.

In the past few months threats have been identified that attack Mac which affect specific vulnerabilities of computers, regardless of their operating system.

The amount of virus circulating for Windows is still much higher, but increased sales of Macs around the world has aroused the interest of the creators of viruses, trojans and malware general.

In a post published on the support page of Apple, the company encourages Mac users to use antivirus utilities.

“Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus-writing process more difficult,” Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) wrote on its support page.

Moreover, it offered three suggestions: Intego VirtusBarrier X5 and Symantec Norton Antivirus for Macintosh, both available at the Apple store, and McAfee VirusScan for Mac.

In a recent ZDNet survey, 60 percent of Mac users said they do not have any anti virus protection on their computers and do not intended to install any either.

This was not the first time this has been recommended. Apple has stated this position several times in the past.

I’d strongly suggest you look through Apple’s tech notes all the way back to 2002 and before.

Here - I did some of the work for you:
